I am a baseball fan living in a basketball state. While I love my Kentucky Wildcats (I’m a basketball season ticket holder) I love baseball even more. The very first sports moment I can remember is the 1970 World Series between my beloved Cincinnati Reds and the Baltimore Orioles. I was all of seven years old. I was mesmerized, from Brooks Robinson’s play at third base to Johnny Bench starting to show his Hall of Fame catching skills, I sat in front of the television and watched all five games.
In this year’s series it’s the Red Sox, winners in the American League, playing the Los Angeles Dodgers, winners in the National League. It is impossible for me to watch the Boston Red Sox in the World Series and not think of the 1975 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, still the greatest World Series of all time. At the same time, I’ve despised the Dodgers from the same moment as they were, back then, the Reds main rival in the National League.
My loyalties are clear. GO SOX!!!!
The win it all in six games.
I, too, share your isolation (oxymoron – ha!) of being a baseball lover in basketball country. My son had a cup of coffee in the Astros system as a pitcher. In 2001, when he was 13, we saw a game in Fenway. That place is something special, for sure.
To have played even a minute of professional baseball would be sooooo cool.
Minor league and it didn’t last long, but he had a great time.
